Why do I need a pump station?
There are many reasons why a sewage pump station is preferable to a normal, gravity waste pipe system.
- It may be the cost of groundworks to allow sewage to flow by gravity outweighs the cost of a sewage pump station.
- It may be that you have a basement with a floor level that is below the main sewer, so a sewage pump station will push the waste upwards until gravity can take over.

Pumping Stations FAQs
What is a pumping station?
Pumping stations are used when there is no natural way of moving either sewage waste or grey/surface water away from a development area.
A pump station is a collection chamber designed to hold liquid with an integral pump suitable for the application to lift the liquid under pressure to another location after which a natural gravity flow can take over.
Are pumping stations noisy?
As the pumps are submerged in the liquid, they are virtually silent during operation.
Are pumping stations safe?
Provided the pump station is suitable for the site requirements, used responsibly and are regularly maintained there shouldn’t be any issues.
How do you size a pumping station?
There are several factors to consider when sizing a pumping station and we recommend contacting our Sales team on 01773 767611 for advice and guidance.
What happens if a pumping station stops working?
In the event of a failure there is a risk that the liquid in the collection chamber will overflow onto the surrounding area. This could result in environmental pollution with the possibility of a fine issued to the owner of the pumping station.
Regular maintenance and servicing of the pumping station is recommended to reduce the risk. Please speak to a member of our Servicing team on 01773 767611 for details.
Do pumping stations smell?
Pumping stations are typically used for the transfer of foul water/sewage waste which do carry some odour. Airtight access covers and adequate separate ventilation to a high level will significantly reduce any odours. Regular use of the facilities connected to the pump station will allow the pump to empty the chamber and remove the risk of additional stagnant water smells.
How does a pumping station work?
When the liquid reaches a predetermined level in the collection chamber, the pump is activated via a float to lift the liquid under pressure through a suitable discharge pipe to another location, after which a natural gravity flow can take over.
